Daniel Negreanu's Chips Get Spilled...Look Out Harrah's

By: Jen Leo – August 05, 2006

Daniel's table was about to break and everyone had racked their chips. Daniel had in the range of 150,000 chips in 7 racks with a good amount of black chips. Just when I was wondering how he was going to carry all of those, a floor person in a white suit came to his side and the chips went crashing down on the table. He immediately accused her of causing the spill, and she immediately denied it while helping him rack them back up again. Daniel has moved to table 57. Boy oh boy is this going to make for a good video cast tomorrow!

Suggestion for Harrah's: rearrange the tables ... to allow a little more space. They've got the room now.

While I won't say it's impossible to rearrange the tables, I will say that the layout of the room is set for things like overhead lights and overhead security cameras. So shifting tables around isn't something done lightly.

Once the field gets considerably smaller, they'll remove some of the tables to create much more space, but the tables being used will stay where they are. Once that happens, ESPN will find their job much easier. About that time, they should be kicking out all non-Card Player media, making your jobs much harder. :(

Was Daniel joking when he was "accusing" the floor person or did he get into full blown monkey tilt?

The floorperson in the white suit is Heather, one of the sweetest people you'll ever meet working for Harrah's. I won't defend dropping the chips, but I'll defend her character. :)

She's human, like everyone else, and dropping chips is an accident waiting to happen. I doubt it will be the last time chips get spilled in this main event. (It happened at the featured table last year.)

There needs to be a safer system for moving large stacks of chips. At the very least, the chips should be counted and verified before and after the move.

Sorry I wasn't clear. It didn't have anything to do with the tables, and Heather didn't drop them. Daniel had all seven racks stacked pretty high. They were in his arms and she came up and (from my viewpoint) *tried* to help him with it. She might've only been trying to pick up three chips on top of the stack or something. It happened very fast. But as soon as they spilled on the table, he started saying it was her fault. And she was saying it wasn't. I'm looking forward to hearing his take on the video cast tomorrow.

No worries, Jen. I'm not accusing you of accusing anybody of anything. :)

But this is a problem (spilled chips) that has occurred before, and it will occur again. There's got to be a better way for tracking chips between tables. (This is also the easiest time for cheaters to add -- or remove -- chips from their stacks.)
