Better Off Deadwood

DEADWOOD, SD--I just spent 3 weeks in one of my favorite poker places.

Deadwood South Dakota (made famous by the HBO series) is an old mining town tucked away in the Black Hills National Forest. The people here are extremely cool and the town is very much a poker town. Next month they're having a city-wide tournament called the Deadwood Shootout where all 5 card rooms are participating. They also keep tournament points across all 5 casinos, how can I not love it here?

In order of my current personal preference, the five poker rooms are:

  1. Cadillac Jack's
  2. best action, best management, best dealers

  3. Saloon #10
  4. best wild west atmosphere

  5. Lucky Nugget
  6. newest and biggest

  7. Silverado
  8. poorly run tournaments

  9. Gold Dust
  10. dirty and smokey

The max bet in South Dakota is $100, so instead of no-limit they have spread limit. It's basically range betting and it can’t exceed the capped amount, like $5-50.

Anyway, this was my 2nd time here and I've decided I have to make it an annual pilgrimage.

Sounds like a pretty interesting place...Thanks for the photo too. I have watched Deadwood on HBO, and seeing HBO's old west set up against your photo is a nice comparison. Seems as though Deadwood hasn't totally lost it's wild west appeal.
