With the Asia Pacific Poker Tour (APPT) Macau Main Event having come and gone and with a host of big name players in town, it was not going to be long before the high stakes cash games kicked off and some news is filtering through about those now.
Sadly, there is very little coverage of these games, which tend to include some of the biggest names in the world, but thanks to modern technology a few tidbits are available that make for interesting reading. Of course, the one and only Phil Ivey returned to poker at the APPT event in Macau last week and after he busted on Day 2, it seems that he has been involved in one of the infamous Macau high stakes games with the likes of Tom Dwan, Sam Trickett and Johnny Chan.
$2 Million Swings
Obviously, it is hard to gather news on specific hands or exactly who is there with no cameras allowed in the poker room but some players have turned to Twitter to discuss their swings. Andrew Robl grabbed attention with the tweet “Been Gambling in Macau. Won 2 million USD straight and was very thankful. Now lost 2 million straight. Thankful for other things.”
Patrik Antonius not Allowed to Play
If those are the kind of crazy swings involved in this game, Patrik Antonius may be happy that he hasn’t been allowed in the game. One of the most reliable posters on the subject on poker forums has said that Antonius has not been allowed to play, despite James Bord trying to get him in the game. Rui Cao had previously said before that many of the “wealthy Chinese” players did not like Antonius playing because he was “too tight,” while the likes of Durrrr, Ivey and Robl are known for a slightly looser style.
Winners and Losers
It seems that the biggest winner is Johnny Chan. Again, the poker forums have brought out some information saying “So far Johnny Chan is the big winner in the big games, up over 11 mill HKD.” Meanwhile Tom Dwan could very well be the big loser in the games. Peter Chan, known as GARFIELD25 on PokerStars showed up on Phil “MrSweets28” Galfond’s table on the online poker site saying “You (sic) best friend in Macau lose a lot money…. Tom Dwan lose 20 million HK.”
