Professional Poker League (or something like that.....)

By: Poker Shrink – October 08, 2006

LAS VEGAS--The highly anticipated Professional Poker League (PPL) held it's player draft yesterday at the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino. Media access was heavily restricted and those that were allowed in were sworn to secrecy. They cannot tell you that the eight teams were divided into categories: the "old guys" the "young guys", female players, European players etc. "I'll take non-bracelet winners from the Ukraine for one hundred Alex."

The names of the players by teams will not be released until the PPL is ready to play and with sponsorships still unsigned and tournament dates as yet unset; we can expect to hear a lot more "secret" media hype and perhaps "see" no PPL poker in the near future.

Secrecy is good for things like the Normandy Invasion or sleeping with your sister-in-law....otherwise it looks and sounds like you are playing 007 with a poker promotion.

Repeat after me guys:

"The media are our friends."

"There is no such thing as bad publicity when you haven't signed your sponsors yet!"

Conceptually I like the idea of the PPL. It's a wonderful goal to have a series of tournaments where the players (finally) don't have to upchuck their own buck. However, this thing has been loosey goosey for over a year now. Funding seems to be the primary issue - and one it appears they still haven't nailed down yet. The underlying issues relative to selection and exclusivity are not particularly pretty either.

I'm a confessed media whore - but even I wouldn't invite publicity until I had my make-up on. I think the PPL is still suffering from a little "bed head" and might need some time to put on a more presentable face.

fair enough ... but i still remember when ESPN was trying to convince us at ALL IN magazine not to give away the winner of the 2005 WSOP (Greg Raymer). Well, eventually they learned that giving away the winner (which couldn't be contained because of that dang internet) actually INCREASED interest.

I am sure the PPL will realize the same thing next year ... that preliminary talk on the internet will improve their TV ratings ... assuming they make it that far.
