Stardust to close in a month

By: Tuscaloosa Johnny – September 27, 2006

StardustIf you've never darkened the doors of the Stardust poker room, you've got only a month left to play some cards there. Officials with Boyd Gaming recently announced that the Stardust, in business since 1958, will close permanently on Nov. 1.

The hotel will be torn down in 2007 to make way for the new $4 billion Echelon Place, a collection of major and boutique hotels, a casino and entertainment, dining and retail outlets. It's been known for at least a year that the Stardust, former home to the likes of the Rat Pack and Wayne Newton, would be torn down, but the date of closure was only recently revealed.

The announcement of the closure has brought out Stardust fans, and apparently the hotel is sold out for its last month in operation.

The casino has a relatively small poker room, but has 10 a.m. tournaments several times a week. If nothing else, go to soak in the history. Earl, one of the dealers there, dealt at the World Series of Poker back in the 1970s and 1980s and shared a treasure trove of stories the last time I played there.

Echelon Place is scheduled to open in 2010.

I'm dying to know what they're going to do with the sign. It's a legend. I really hope they save it or put it downtown. The marketing people for Echelon called me last week to talk about trends in luxury travel.

It's sad the Stardust is going away, but exciting that the North end of the Strip is being revitalized.

I will be at the Stardust on the Final Day and will bring you a memorial report.

I assume you will also be swiping as much random crap as you can get your hands on too?

awww...the Stardust was my Vegas first way back when. We all stayed at the Westward Ho, which closed it's doors in November. I will always remember the Stardust because I won a bunch of money playing craps. That was before I played poker.

One of my best Vegas memories was at the Stardust last year. I took my friend Charlie to Sin City to play poker - he'd been sick with cancer for two years and was on his way downhill, so I figured we ought to get him out there while he was still getting around OK. We stayed at another now-defunct Vegas casino, the Westward Ho, and on Monday morning we walked across the parking lot to the Stardust for one of those Monday AM tourneys. They paid 4 spots out of 104.

I bounced in 17th after flopping trips against a guy who thought 8-8 was gold, and Charlie was short-stacked but still hanging around at that point. He went on a monster rush of cards right after I busted and made his way to the final table. Once he got there, he played power poker straight out of Super System. It was quite the sight to behold. To borrow a line from CardPlayer, once the dust settled Charlie had won the tourney.

Did I mention it was the first live tournament he ever played? We had quite the celebration that night. :-)
