  • As expected a much bigger field showed up for this Day 1C on a Saturday. Both the Amazon and the Brazilia rooms at the Rio were near full. Rumors were that Day 1D tomorrow was sold out but we can confirm this is only a rumor and seats remain available for Sunday. Lindy will provide accurate numbers when they become available.
  • .

  • The Mega Satellites were smaller yesterday but those fields have come back big today too. The 1 PM Mega Satellite was sold out and seats for the 4 PM,6 PM, and 9 PM were going fast.
  • .

  • Another "two of my favorite players" sighting today. Mike Matusow was playing at the ESPN feature table and doing well. Liz Lieu was also in the field and after a Diva-like tardy arrival, she also was on the upside of the chip race.
  • .

  • Interesting that some of the media, who came in only for the main event, are now complaining about the long hours. My fellow full-time, full-tournament media friends can only laugh at those who find covering one tournament a day for only five rounds to be a tough assignment.

liz34Liz Lieu, the poker player of many poker player's dreams, has gone back-to-back with final tables at the Asia Pacific Poker Tour in Macau, China.

The two big events in Macau were the $2,500 three day Main Event and the $15,000 two day High Roller event. Liz played them both and made the final table in both. The only player to reach both final tables.

Liz would probably tell you that this was a much needed showing after a long drought in her tournament poker play but the truth is that she continues to dominate the cash games where she loves to play. There is little or no reporting on cash games action in the poker media where the focus is on the TV tournaments.

But Liz is not back, she was never gone.

PartyPoker.com Premier League Poker FINAL TABLE starts airing on Channel 4 in UK on August 22nd. The final table schedule is:

    Channel 4 August 22nd at 0:10am

Premier League Poker is a new format which brings together 12 of the poker worlds' leading players. The challenging format is what makes the Premier League stand out from other poker events made for television. Each player was required to play six times, after which the leading four players would advance to the final table. The players in fifth to eigth places then played off in heads-up matches to qualify for the two remaining seats at the final table.

US ‘Poker Brat’ Phil Hellmuth enters as chip leader closely followed by Germany’s Eddy Scharf. Finland’s Juha Helppi and England’s Ian Frazer automatically qualified for the final table through their positions in the final league table. There were two play-off heads-up matches for the last two spots on the final table with Liz Lieu beating Kenna James and Vicky Coren seeing off Andrew Black.

Here is the complete list of Premier League Poker players:

channel 4 A sneak preview of PartyPoker.com Premier League Poker is now available online. I should warn a few of you that the video is rated "18 years of age or older" in several very conservative countries. No nudity but Devilfish is in fine verbal form and is that Tony G. chasing Phil Hellmuth around the table?

    Find the promo video here.

The televised version of the Premier League Poker gets underway on Tuesday 22nd May on Channel 4 in the UK.

The series features 12 of the world’s best players playing in a unique league format for a $500,000 pot. Each player bought in for $20,000, with PartyPoker.com adding $260,000. The field included:

    Phil Hellmuth
    Dave ‘The Devilfish’ Ulliott
    Tony G
    Andy Black
    Kiril Gerasimov
    Liz Lieu
    Ian Frazer
    Roland De Wolfe
    Vicky Coren
    Juha Helppi
    Kenna James
    Eddy Scharf.

After each player played 6 times, the leading 4 players advanced to the final table with the players in 5th - 8th place played off in heads-up matches for the remaining 2 seats at the final table.

A selection of player quotes after the break, these are publicity quotes only; I think you will find the video much more reflective of what the play was actually like, except that first quote from Vicky Coren!

liz blueThe PartyPoker World Open at the Three Mills Studios, London is underway, featuring the strongest field in the history of the tournament. The televised tournament is sold out and features 72 players with a $7,000 buy-in and a total prize pool in excess of $500,000. The event is produced by Matchroom Sport and will be broadcast on Five in the UK later this year and distributed worldwide.

The field is packed with highly respected names from the world of Poker. PartyPoker Premier League Poker stars Liz Lieu, Juha Helppi, Roland De Wolfe, Tony G, Vicky Coren, Dave "The Devilfish" Ulliott and Ian Frazer.

I spoke with Liz Lieu last week at the Bellagio in Las Vegas and asked about her impending jump over the pond the the UK:

"I'm so excited to be heading back to London for another Party Poker event. The World Open looks to be a great tournament, and I'm happy to be invited to play."

In addition, for the very first time in the tournament's history, all four members of the UK's most successful poker playing team the Hendon Mob take to the felt. Ram Vaswani, Joe Beevers and brothers Barny and Ross Boatman will all be under the spotlight and fancied to do well on their debuts. They too will be fresh from the Bellagio tournament, where both Ross and Barny went deep. Others to look out for include John Magill (12th WSOP Main Event 2006), recent Irish Open winner Marty Smyth, 2006 PartyPoker European Open champion Liam Flood, Don Fagan, Thomas Wahlroos, Roy Brindley and Roberto Romanello.

Last year's winner was Pippa Flanders, a well respected pro from Preston, UK, but the rise in her fortunes in the last year and the $200,000 she scooped from the World Open in 2006 mean that she inadvertently booked an expensive cruise on the QE2 later this month so she is unable to defend her title. Pippa and her husband, fellow pro Tim Flanders, have a plan, however, and are entering their 23-year-old daughter Charlotte instead.

    A PartyPoker spokesman said:

"The field is the strongest in the tournament's history and we're very pleased. It's a shame that Pippa Flanders isn't back to defend her crown but Charlotte will surely defend the title valiantly."

The preliminary tournaments began on the 27th April with a celebrity table. The semi-finals start on May 3rd with the final on the evening of May 4th.

While the U.S. online poker world is in turmoil, the bricks and mortar casinos and card rooms are experienceing a boom and not just in the U.S. The Asian Poker Tour is set to launch in Singapore next month and I am happy to say I will be there to cover the tournament.

Nearly everyone believes that Asia will be the next big hot spot for poker and the APT is just the first step in moving Singapore, Macau and other Far East venues onto the international poker stage. Already the APT is associating itself with top flight Asian-American players.

John Phan and Liz Lieu will go to Singapore to take part in the Betfair Asian Poker Tour. They are good friends and two of the hottest names in poker. Originally from Vietnam , they have built their poker careers in America .

John “The Razor” Phan has close to $3m in tournament winnings. With numerous results on the World Poker Tour (WPT) and at the World Series of Poker (WSOP), he was inches from being poker player of the year in 2005.

Liz “The Poker Diva” Lieu is a regular winner at high stakes cash game tables in Las Vegas . For several years she has been playing on the WPT, European Poker Tour (EPT) and other circuits around the world.

Both are engaged in charity work and have pledged 20 percent of future tournament winnings to charity. If either player wins the Asian Poker Tour event in Singapore, this could mean up to $100,000 for their designated charities.
