What's the Deal with the Dealers?

By: Poker Shrink – July 14, 2006 | World Series of Poker

Anyone else notice that the dealer's were very, very, very quiet in the box yesterday? Could it be that they were told not to talk about the "paycheck fiasco" and that they were to a person feeling like the guy who walks behind the horse in the parade.

Which of the following is true? Which is rumor? Inquiring minds like drama and afterall, this is the World Series of Something.

Going in to the 2006 Series the dealer's knew the new pay structure meant less money than in previous years. But it seems the communication on exactly what 'less' meant has not been crystal clear. When the Week Two checks came out Wednesday might there was a communal explosion of anger and disappointment.

Could it actually be true that a senior WSOP official stood up in a dealer meeting and said: "This is the first time we are not actually stealing tokes from the dealers." That has to be a rumor, right?

Could it be true that loan sharks are making a killing floating short term, high vig advances to the dealer's, who don't have enough cash to carry them to the next paycheck?

Could it be true that chip runners, who have never dealt a hand, are making 25% more than the dealers?

Could it be true that dealers "in the bullpen" have clocked in at the Rio and then gone to deal at other Strip card rooms while on the WSOP clock, before coming back to the Rio to clock out?

Could it be true that the house rake on the $50,000 HORSE event was $429,000? Oh wait, that one is true. But will the promised 1% ($71,500) actually make it into the dealer toke pool for the next paycheck?

Inquiring minds think that a world class event should actually show some class.
